IDEAS For Us is pleased to announce its partnership with the Youth Climate Report (YCR). YCR is a crowd-sourced science journalism project — by youth for the world.
The project was developed by Neko Harbour Entertainment and is presented at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conferences in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Youth Climate Report gives global youth the skills and tools to report on and so contribute to the dialogue around the science of, and policy responses to, climate change. IDEAS partnership with YCR will give its chapter members a voice at the high level (UNFCCC) climate change policy discussion table.
The partnership will allow IDEAS students and youth to get involved in two ways: by registering and contributing to the YCR blog and by applying to be YCR video reporter. IDEAS members will work as reporters and contribute to the discussion around climate change via their interviews and news segments, and have a potential impact on delegates participating at the UNFCC conferences of the parties (COPs). IDEAS and YCR Interview teams (video reporter and segment producer) will find a climate change scientist or researcher to interview. After introducing themselves and the project, teams will then go out and do the interview. The interview is cut into a short (2-3 minutes) news report, and the segments screen online at the Youth Climate Report website.
Members working as bloggers, IDEAS will gain attention and followers in the worldwide climate change and environmental blogosphere and may eventually be invited to contribute guest blog posts for other well-known blogs. YCR and IDEAS bloggers will contribute regular articles, photos and short video reportages on the subject of climate change science. Video reporters will take on interview duties in partnership with fellow university and college students, who will act as interview segment producers.
Through this YCR and IDEAS partnership, training programs will be organized for IDEAS and YCR team. The training will empower the youth to participate in the climate change dialogue at the very highest policy level (the UNFCCC) and so become knowledge ambassadors in their communities, while at the same time learning essential digital (journalistic) story-telling skills.
IDEAS and YCR partnership will be working to create sub-offices in each of the continents where these organizations operate. Currently, there is an ongoing works to create for IDEAS for Africa and YCR Africa in Ghana. This will create opportunities for active involvement of members in global issues at their continental levels.
This year, the video news segments the YCR and IDEAS team will submit will also be screened for delegates participating at The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (COP20) to take place in Peru.
The founders and Board of Directors of YCR and IDEAS for Us appreciates the work of the Africa Director for IDEAS for Us, Emmanuel Marfo who is the Communications and Outreach Director for YCR for helping arrange this partnership.
