20151106_120139Today is a huge victory. Thanks to the hard work, continued efforts, and loud voices of thousands of environmental leaders, President Obama has announced that his administration will reject the Keystone XL Pipeline.

“We’ve got to come together around an ambitious framework to protect the one planet we’ve got while we still can. If we want to prevent the worst effects of climate change before it’s too late, the time to act is now. Not later, not someday, but right here and now.” —President Obama

Why is this important?

* Completion of the Keystone XL would risk oil spills along the pipeline, which would traverse highly sensitive terrain, and would create 17% higher greenhouse gas emissions from the extraction of oil sands compared to extraction of conventional oil. By rejecting this disastrous project, this sets the standard for climate action by keeping millions of tons of carbon underground.

* This historic event shows that when people are determined, organized, and stand up against the fossil fuel industry, change is possible. President Obama rejected the Keystone XL because WE REJECTED the Keystone XL.
