We are super excited to announce the launching of of our first major project in Ugwan Maigero, Kaduna State, Nigeria!
Established a short time ago, IDEAS For UGWAN MAIGERO (Kaduna) is IDEAS For NIGERIA’s first community chapter, keenly passionate about sustainable agriculture for optimal food production, food preservation and food security.
Led by Dayo Akinbinuade, Oridota Joel, Adeyemi Victor and Ikuomola Juliet, IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero has recently launched its first major community project in Ugwan Maigero (Kaduna State), appropriately branded as “Bring Back the Gero” – a unique, grand scale agricultural project aimed at empowering the local Ugwan Maigero farmers to begin reproducing in commercial volume, “gero” (English name – millet) which the community was distinctly reputed for in the past.
Located in Chikun Local Government Area, Ugwan Maigero is a historic community widely known as a major producer of “gero” (millet) at the end of every farm year. Today, this community which once prided itself as a major producer of millet, cannot boast of a single bag of “gero” at the end of a farm year, thereby making it impossible for it to thrive greatly on the production of this food as it used to.
This dismal situation prompted our community chapter – IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero to step into action as we embark on “Bring Back the Gero” project.
Divided into phases, IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero has successfully completed the first phase of the project and in a grand style – the holding of a first of its kind town hall meeting with the stakeholders (the community) who are also the beneficiaries, and at the event, the project was officially unveiled.
Organised in collaboration with CALPED Agricultural Solutions – a group of socially responsible Kaduna youth, the flag off town meeting held at Ray Onward Hotel in Ungwan Maigero and was largely attended by farmers in the community.
Interestingly, the Special Guest at the event was the Commissioner for Agriculture of Kaduna State in company of Ugwan Maigero community heads and other key influencers.
IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero lead – Dayo Akinbinuade had a robust engagement with the community as he sensitized them on the importance of food production, preservation and security for the continuity of the human race.
Joyfully, the Ministry of Agriculture of Kaduna State promised to partner with IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero during any of its projects.
We are confident this project will be a turn around in the community as IDEAS For Ugwan Maigero begins to explore ways and measure sustainable solutions to restore the community’s lost glory not only for now, but to have enough “gero” for the future both for consumption and commercial purposes.
