On Wednesday February 18th, almost 400 people from various organizations gathered at the old Capitol building in Tallahassee. I.D.E.A.S., Sierra Club, Florida Conservation Coalition, River Kidz or St. Lucie, Sustainable Tallahassee, and many other organizations gathered under the ambitions of the Floridians’ Clean Water Declaration Campaign and Florida’s Land and Water Legacy. The idea was to bring attention to Florida’s troubled waterways and the people’s intentions for the funds allocated by Amendment 1, which passed last November. These concerned citizens travelled to the capitol to ensure that the funds allocated by Amendment 1 are used on projects to protect and preserve Florida’s water and wetlands.

There were many great speakers and I feel we really delivered our objectives to the legislators. I had the opportunity to pass out information to our Senators and Representatives, and was able to speak directly with two Representatives. It is so very important that our voices are heard. If nobody speaks up then there is no one to defend our wildlife from destruction. Our legislators must know, as 75% of the voters have shown for Amendment 1, Floridians want to protect and preserve our diverse yet fragile ecology. Events like these are crucial for a sustainable future. I feel with this event we accomplished a lot for our environment.
